I was wondering about this the other day. I realized I was giving stuff to the pirate and my monuments aren't done. So I guess I shouldn't give him anything until my monuments are done unless I have a lot of extra of something.

Yes I like to give them a bit of time and go do some other stuff. Aldo, others report the sims going outside. When I use the one story boat, my sims just stand in front of the counters and sinks. They don't go outside at all. But, when I used the 2 story, they go outside or upstairs when they finish...

I just tried an hour with only ten Sims and clicking one at a time. I got 21 l.p., and lacked just one medal completing the grid. So it is virtually the same as 20 Sims clicking all at once. (That is for me. Your mileage may vary.) It seemed a lot more work though. I'm going to test 10 clicking all...
